A cool side bar to the Mecca is that it is owned by the Dombalis family. Nick Sr ran the restaurant and Nick Jr became an attorney.
Elizabeth Edwards (Mrs. John) was an attorney in that practice when she worked.
Also, if you ever want a word with the NC Supreme Court, go upstairs at the Mecca to the second floor dining room. They have a table there most days with Justices and Appeals Court judges.
Finally, one of those great sandwiches is called a Gary Dornburger in honor of the late NC State radio color man who ate there almost every day.

I ate at Crooks Corner for the first time this week, and loved the fried oysters and the shrimp and grits. I'm already planning to go back!

Duck, MF, anybody else too.... Did you ever eat at Nick's Seafood in Va.?
I am told it was an institution in the area and that many famous people ate there through the years. A good friend of mine (deceased) told me he built the place for Nick and Mary back in the 60's or 70's (I think) when they decided to build a (then) new place.

You didn't say where in Virginia, but I have eaten at Nick's in Virginia Beach and in Yorktown. I think they are now part of a chain. The food is pretty good--kind of a Greek family thing with seafood, steaks and some other stuff (which I never ate). I haven't done that in a long time--early 90s or so.

For the life of me I can't say for sure which place it was, but it went back for years. I want to say Yorktown, but it could have been anywhere in Va. because Garnett built all over the state. Nick and Mary were the owners. Greeks indeed, and according to my friend Garnett they were lovely people who did much for the community.
Garnett said that after he built the place and Nick and he got to know one another, it was impossible for him to buy a meal there, because Nick wouldn't take his money. I hate that Nick and Mary are both gone. From what I read on the internet the old menu is gone and the new menu is pretty standard fare. I hate I missed it, and them.

Hate to break this news, but I went to the Angus Barn last week for a family dinner with the in-laws. Very disappointing. Ordered the filet medium (although I prefer it medium rare sometimes, I went with the waitress's recommendation). It came out medium rare color, and lukewarm. The bacon wrap was soggy and undercooked. There were eight adults at the dinner ... at least 4-5 of us were disappointed with our meal. We go every year in March, and this is the first time I can say they seem to be slipping.
My scotch with a splash of water was good though ...

Write to Vann Eure (she is married but still goes by her maiden name for professional matters) in care of the Barn. She will make that dinner right.

I've spent a lot more time over the years driving through
Virginia than I have staying there much. Don't know about
Nick's.

Has Angus Barn changed its coat & tie policy? I had to wear
their one-size-fits-all (hah!) blue blazer once

No more coat and tie policy. I wore a button-down shirt and khakis.

I ate lunch yesterday at the Bluebird Diner in Mt. Airy. I had the best onion rings I have ever had and a cheeseburger that still has me thinking about it. I'll go back on my next trip to Mt. Airy. (This was a motorcycle ride with friends, and we ride to eat!)

I ate Easter Sunday dinner at Chez Duck's.
Ham, Potato Salad, Green Beans, Cucumbers, Tomatos, Orange Salad, Crescent Rolls, and Chocolate Cake.
We only had 14 this year, but 3 more dropped by later.

My daughter treated us to a fabulous Easter dinner. She made leg of lamb, lemon roasted new potatoes, asparagus in phyllo...and for dessert a chocolate coconut cheesecake. Yummmmm.....

Ham, my world famous potato salad, grill-roasted chicken
stuffed with wild rice, green beans, sautéed brocholini
with fresh garlic and shiitake mushrooms (another one of my inventions). Homemade (Mrs. MindForms is the baker) yeast rolls, apple and cherry pie.
The grandkids and I "foundered" big time

The problem was, you were spelling it INcorrectly. I fixed it, because I couldn't stand looking at "poopake mushrooms."

Does this mean that I no longer have to call people "poohead" but just add an extra "i" into what I really mean?
